The 2025 season is set to begin with two weeks of preseason matches and we are excited to implement our Rugby Operations in alignment with Strategic Priority 2 of the ERU 2025 – 2027 Strategic Plan (click here to read the full strat plan).

What?

Develop a seeding format for senior M/W at the beginning of the year that allows clubs to assess their own capacity in terms of numbers and competitive level

How?

Conduct a series of mini-game tournaments for senior M/W
teams in the month of May … A series of 3 team mini-game round robins each week …

Why?

To help clubs determine the most appropriate levels to enter their teams for the competitive season .. The purpose is to create a ranking “ladder” from which tiered competitions, Alberta Cup, 1st division, 2nd divisions can be established

Rationale?

The shorter games allow for more opportunities to compare against others … teams may be allowed to play at reduced numbers as needed

Next Steps?

Upon completion of the seeding round, ERU to outline proposed break-out for Divisions. Clubs to finalize teams and divisions based on evidence from seeding round results.

The Edmonton Rugby Union is located within the territories of Treaty 6, 7, and 8 as well as the Métis settlements and six regions of the Métis nation of Alberta within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. We acknowledge and are grateful that rugby throughout all of the Edmonton Rugby Union happens on the traditional meeting grounds, gathering places, and travelling routes of the Nehiyawak, Dene, Nakota Sioux, Saulteaux, Niitsitapi, Tsuu Tina, and Iyarhe Nakoda (Stoney Nakoda). We honour and thank all the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit who have lived, played, gathered, and whose footsteps have marked these lands for centuries past and will forever more.
